Day 10 Bly Gap to Stealth Site

Friday, April 22, 2016; ATMile 91.7
------------------------------
Walked from  83.2 to 95.7 or 12.5 miles.
Started 7:00 AM, stopped 04:00 AM.
Ave mph was 1.39, excluding lunch.
Battery used: 8 percent
------------------------------
Today it rained and rained and rained. Last night it rained. Yesterday a trail runner told Sage and Lilly Slipper there would be no significant accumulation. Balderdash!

The tent has dirt splatter all over the outside. Everything I wore today was sopping wet. And I expect to put them all on wet tomorrow morning. Hoping sunny then so they will dry.

I think Sage and Lilly Slipper are older than me. They camped by the tree last night near me. Nice people. I only saw 3 thrus going north today. Suspect they may all have stayed at the shelters.

I took some photos of the rainy landscape. Nothing to look forward to. Big hill in today's hike but most grades were relatively gentle. I found the same stealth site as last year to camp. Then my ankle was seriously hurting. I've bee more careful this year and everything seems fine.

No AT&T service. Have a good night.

Day 9 Dick's Creek Gap to Bly Gap

Thursday, April 21, 2016; AT Mile 78.6
------------------------------
Walked from 74.6 to 83.2 or 8.6 miles.
Started 09:23 AM, stopped 03:30 PM.
Ave mph was 1.41, excluding lunch.
Battery used:  1 percent
------------------------------
The AT Guide says I walked 9 miles. We stopped by the big photographed tree. The night at Budget Inn was comfortable. I got a Subway for the trail and took the 0900 shuttle.

There just weren't any views today. Lots of trees and hills, but no good vistas. Sunny till about 1:30 then clouds and cold breeze came in.  Left GA for NC just before the campsite. Wasn't sure rain wasn't coming early so ate and set up camp quickly.

Sage and Lady Slipper and one other were at the tree when I got here. Thought they were a day ahead but they took an extra zero for here swelled ankle.

Started off with Tex, Dregs and Melissa but they went way ahead. Merlin fell behind. And saw a few other section hikers.

Rumor is that AT is closed just past Winding Stair Gap for a fire. That's the Franklin exit. Hope rain tonight will put it out. Otherwise strong winds will make it worse.

Good day!

The shot below is Sage, the Brazilian, and Lady Slipper.

Day 8 Zero in Hiawassee

A zero means no hiking (on the trail) and usually corresponds to a town day. My knee aches a bit when starting each day and will give me a twinge on steep downs, so I figured the rest day would be good for me.

Thought I would spend a blog describing my kit and camping. But first how I got here. I got the usual chores of laundry and resupply (thoughtful wife is sending mail drops)  done yesterday. But I was tired and didn't have time to get fully caught up on the blog or recharge my devices or plan the next few days. So I got the Top of Georgia shuttle to Dick's Creek Gap and then the Budget Inn shuttle here to Hiawassee. The rooms are very basic but inexpensive. Lots of food places within walking distance.

Now my kit. I wear convertible pants, a long sleeved merino shirt, darn tough wool socks, dirty girl gaiters, a hat, and Altra Lone Peaks trail runners. I've got 2 extra pairs of socks and a merino T.  I've got a wind shirt, rain jacket and pants, and a down puffy (jacket).  I have a 30 deg down quilt, a Neoair Xlite air pad, a cuben Altaplex tent, and a Zpacks cuben Arc Blast backpack. I've got an electronics bag, a repai kit bag, and a first aid kit. For a stove I use a new version of the caldera cone and an alcohol stove. I cook by heating water then rehydrating dinners in freezer quart bags. See my Gear page for more details. All told my base weight is about 11.8 pounds. 4 days of food brings it up to about 18 pounds.  With water it can go up to 23 pounds (2 liters).

When I load up the pack I put a Steripen (UV water filter) and my Ricoh camera in pack shoulder pockets. One hip belt pocket has snacks. The other has sanitizer, toothbrush, toilet paper, trowel, bug repellant, sunscreen, soap, headlight and knife (good sized hip belt pockets). In the packs back mesh pocket goes my tent pegs, maps, wind shirt, a cuben sit cloth, and my inReach Explorer. The two side pockets hold a Nalgene (wide mouth for Steripen use) and a Dasani water bottle that I drink from. In the packs main pocket goes a 2 liter Platypus backup water pouch (empty), a plastic compactor bag that keeps dry my puffy, quilt and optionally my spare clothes bag dry. My rolled up Neoair stands along one side. Then goes electronics, repair/first aid bag, and stove. I shove all that down with my dry tent. Then goes my food bag and finally the bag with my rain gear. We are going to get rain in the next couple of days. I might have to move the tent out to the mesh pocket.

I think that's enough for now. In the future I'll describe my camp site 'operations.'  Here' a quick shot of the motel room. You'll miss the aroma. (:-). By the way triple crowner Buck 30 is here. So are Tex, Dregs, and Melissa. Now to do some trail planning...

Day 7 Trey Mountain to Top of Georgia

Like last year, one of my apps disappeared. This was my Hikers Assistant. Last year AT Hiker and Blog Touch Pro disappeared. Luckily I had good signal and was able to redownload the app. My track and waypoints were in my iCloud container, but I lost the maps I spent days downloading. IOS needs some kind of setting to prevent inadvertent app deletes. Anyway no elevation profile today.

I went from 58.1 to 69.6 plus 0.8 miles of side trails for water.  So I walked 12.3 miles from about 0705 to 3:30 pm.

I'm staying at Top of Georgia hostel. Picked up my mail drop. They do your laundry and give you clothes to wear. Got my Smoky Mt permit, had half a pizza and I'm trying to do my blog. You get breakfast here in the morning and a shuttle to the trail.

It was sunny early today and a thermometer at one shelter read 88 degrees. The first seven miles had no water and I was close to out. The two people behind me were. Lots of downhill and some strenuous ups. As yesterday Comet, Dregs and Melissa passed me. Think they went on into Hiawasee. Tex / Marty caught up with me at the water but decided to camp and catch a shuttle into town in the morning  for a zero.

Not sure what the masses of people are doing. You see them at the shelters but not on the trail. Woodstock and Sunshine are in the bunk room. I'm probably going to go into town tomorrow for a zero. Will work on the blog and photos.

Day 6 Stealth Site to Trey Mountain

Monday, April 18, 2016, AT Mile 58.1
------------------------------
Walked from 51.5 to 64.0 or 12.5 miles.
Started 07:03 AM, stopped 05:42 PM.
Ave mph was 1.17, excluding lunch.
Battery used:  4 percent
------------------------------
It was a tough day. Two big ups. Hot and sunny. I'm on the top of Trey Mountain at a nice camp site. I didn't want to go the extra half mile down to the shelter to find either no free sites or sites that sloped.

Passed Vino and Marty right after I started this morning. Vino was the lady with no water. Marty's probably up at the shelter. Dregs and Melissa passed me a couple of times. They are fast. There were a few I passed including Bear. He was BIG. He had on military boots because he couldn't find any hiking boots big enough. He carried a big pack and moved slow.

At Unicoi Gap we got trail magic from a church group. I had Powerade, a hamburger and a hot dog. They were a great group and friendly!  Best lunch I've had on the trail.   Chef, Frisky and a young lady who didn't give her name passed me coming up Trey Mountain.

Supper was good and the view is great. I even got to call Susan. Seems to be raining cats and dogs in San Antonio. Have a great night!

Day 5 Neels Gap to Stealth Site

Sunday, April 17, 2016, AT Mile 45.1
------------------------------
Walked from 42.3 to 51.5 or 9.2 miles.
Started 06:54 AM, stopped 03:41 PM.
Ave mph was 1.07, excluding lunch.
Battery used:  3 percent
------------------------------
Apparently I didn't wait long enough before turning on airplane mode this morning. The start point shows several miles up the AT from where I really started. I actually hiked 13.4 miles by the guide.

Last night in the hostel was nice. Though a nice lady from Puerto Rico came in late, took the bunk above me and snored all night. Everyone talked till 1000. I got out early at 0700 and haven't seen any of them today. Water Falls was zero'ing, but not thru liking. He did the thru in 99. A CPU designer that I don't think wants to go back to work. Walk More arrived later than me. He was at the hostel, but skipped the approach trail. I missed him in passing. Lots of folks camped up the hill from the hostel. Course there was only one free bunk left anyway.

Quiet day on the trail. Only two backpackers passed me. Though I did see several day hikers. Sunny and hot!  Lots of trees with no foliage and lots of mountains behind me.

I did catch up to one thru seated on the trail clutching an empty water bottle just before here. She had used two quarts in the last 1.5 mile uphill. The guide was wrong about water at a sight .5 mile back. I gave her half a liter and checked the Guthook app to confirm the next water is in .7 miles. I think she's going to get that app ASAP.

I did have one worry today. I thought the lady above me had dropped her jacket during the night. They keep the lights off in there, so it was an assumption. On the trail I couldn't remember seeing my down jacket when I packed this morning. Thought it had come out of my pack hidden in my down quilt. I was very happy to see it in my pack just now.

The tent site is dry, but the next water site tomorrow is just 0.5 mile down the trail. I'm on a hilltop and hope to have a nice breeze. Have a good evening!

Day 4 Lance Creek to Neels Gap

Saturday, April 16, 2016; AT Mile 31.7
------------------------------
Walked from 31.3 to 39.1 or 7.8 miles.
Started 07:04 AM, stopped 12:59 PM.
Ave mph was 1.31, excluding lunch.
Battery used:  1 percent
------------------------------
Looks like I just don't go very fast. Though there was a big pack at Lance Creek last night and only 3 passed me today. One of those figured they all must be late risers.

I stopped at Mountain Crossings for a bunk, shower, and pizza. Pizza was ok, the milk was delicious. I wanted to take it easy on the knee, and they have WiFi so I plan to get caught up on the blog with photos!

Last night was miserable. The tent pad was seriously slanted. Trying to stay on an air pad that is sloped is a real pain. Bunks here are minimal, but they are flat!

Weather was great today with sun from early morning. Ranger at top of Blood Mountain said no rain till Thursday, though it will get cooler.

The hike up the mountain was long, so the 1,500 foot rise didn't feel too bad. The trail down was very rocky and steep, not fun.

You can see the elevation profile here. Have a great day!

This is part of the boot tree at Mountain Crossings.
